R v Jones [2017] NZDC 9315

Sentencing — threatening to kill — wilful damage — assault with intent to injure — assault with weapon — wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm — possession of an offensive weapon — theft — strike warning. The defendant drove to the victim's parent's home in hopes of finding her. The defendant yelled abuse and demanded to know where the victim was. The defendant put the victim's parent into a headlock and used the machete he had with him to cut the top of his head. The defendant then went to another address to locate the victim where he assaulted and cut with a machete another male. The defendant received a discount for his guilty plea and remorse and was sentenced to five years and four months imprisonment. Judgment Date: 5 May 2017
