Sentencing — injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm — domestic violence — R v Taueki [2005] 3 NZLR 372. The defendant appeared for sentence on a charge of injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He had attacked his wife without warning, striking her head and hand with a weapon and punching her in the face. The defendant provided no explanation for his actions and claimed not to remember the offending. A psychiatrist and psychologist assessed the defendant and were unable to explain what he did. The aggravating features were use of a weapon, attack to the head, unprovoked violence, and serious injuries. The Court started with five years and made deductions for guilty plea and lack of prior offending. The final sentence was three years two months.
