Sexual offending — principles of youth justice — Children, Young Persons, and Their Families Act 1989, ss 208 and 307. The young person was sentenced under s 307 on sexual violation charges to supervision with activity for a period of six months. A STOP programme would be attended for the duration of the order. Relevant section 208 principles included: “that a child or young person who commits an offence should be kept in the community so far as that is practicable and consonant with the need to ensure the safety of the public” (s 208(d)), and “that any measures for dealing with offending by a child or young person should so far as it is practicable to do so address the causes underlying the child’s or young person’s offending” (s 208(fa)).
