Sentencing — robbing victim of money — supervision with activity — Oranga Tamariki Act 1989, s 283. The young person appeared for sentencing in relation to a robbery. He and his associates had robbed a store while pretending to carry guns and inflicted violence on the victim. A sentence of supervision with activity for six months was recommended. This was the young person's first time in the Youth Court. He had immediately accepted responsibility, had shown remorse and had had a turbulent childhood that was marred by drug use and a lack of positive role models. The Judge accepted a supervision with activity order was appropriate, the only concern being that it would place the young person back into the care of his mother who was a heavy methamphetamine user. However, the young person had said he wanted to be a role model for his younger siblings and was completely turned off methamphetamine after seeing how it had destroyed his family. The young person was sentenced to six months supervision with activity and his mother (who had not come to the hearing) was urged to seek help for her drug problems. Judgment Date: 22 November 2018. * * * Note: Names have been changed to comply with legal requirements * * *
