Compulsory treatment order — alcoholism — Substance Addiction (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act 2017, ss 3, 7, 8, 9, 10, 23, 29, 32 & 75. This hearing was to determine whether to grant the district health board's application for a compulsory treatment order in respect of the subject person, by way of an application review. The subject person had been first admitted to a treatment facility under the Substance Addiction (Compulsory Assessment and Treatment) Act in 2015 and again in early 2020. Since discharge in mid-2020 he had been admitted to hospital on several occasions for planned alcohol withdrawal treatment and on two occasions had presented to the emergency department for alcohol withdrawal and confusion. The Judge considered the medical evidence in two reports filed as well as hearing from a social worker and the subject person himself and determined that the subject person met the high criteria of the legislation. A compulsory treatment was necessary and the Judge made a compulsory treatment order. Judgment Date: 23 July 2021. * * * Note: names have been changed to comply with legal requirements. * * *
