Sentencing — unlicensed plumber — sanitary plumbing — Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006, ss 8 & 123 — Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board v Maaka [2015] 3 NZLR 854. The defendant was to be sentenced after pleading guilty to a charge laid under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act. The defendant, without a licence or authorisation to undertake such work, had fully renovated the victims' bathroom. The renovation included the installation of a bath, toilet, basin, shower and all the associated pipes and fittings. The victims paid the defendant $10,321 for the renovations. A complaint was made to the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board, who found that there had been a number of significant errors with the work that created a health and safety risk for the victims. The Court established a starting point for sentence at a $2,500 fine, which was reduced by the defendant's guilty plea to an end sentence of $2,000 plus court costs of $130. Judgment Date: 6 September 2023
