Sentencing — wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm — stabbing — carriage of a knife — R v Taueki [2005] 3 NZLR 372. The defendant appeared for sentence on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He had become involved in a street altercation and stabbed the victim in the abdomen. The Court commented on the need for a deterrent sentence, given the seriousness of knife crime. The Court found that the offending fell into band 1 of R vTaueki and set a start point of four and a half years' imprisonment, uplifted by six months for offending while on supervision. The Court applied discounts for youth, personal circumstances and guilty plea, meaning a final sentence of three years two months. Judgment Date: 21 June 2019.
