Sentencing — male assaults female — injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm — injuring with intent to injure — possession of knife — ill-treatment of dog — R v Taueki [2005] 3 NZLR 372 — R v Nuku [2012] NZCA 584, [2013] 2 NZLR 39. The defendant appeared for sentence after pleading guilty to eight charges, one representative male assaults female, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, two injuring with intent to injure, two threatening to kill, possession of a knife, and the ill-treatment of a dog. The victim was the defendant's partner and the offending spanned two separate incidents. In the first incident, he assaulted the victim after an argument, breaking into the room where she had locked herself, punching her multiple times, banging her head on the floor, and throwing her across a room. During the second incident the defendant again forced his way into a locked room, kicked the victim's dog, and threatened to kill both the victim and her dog. The aggravating features of the offending were the attacks to the victim's head, a prolonged attack (the first incident), the presence of children, premeditation, and a vulnerable victim. The start point for both sets of offending was three years nine months. There was a six-month uplift for the defendant's significant list of previous violence convictions. After a discount for guilty plea, the final sentence was three years five months, and the Court gave the defendant his second threestrike warning. Judgment Date: 13 April 2018. * * * Note: names have been changed to comply with legal requirements. * * *
