Sentencing — aggravated robbery — firearms — R v Mako [2000] 2 NZLR 170. The defendant appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to a range of charges, including aggravated robbery. The defendant entered a convenience store armed with a sawn-off shotgun, told the complainant to get down, and took a large quantity of cigarettes and cash. Additionally, while on bail, the defendant was stopped by police, provided false information and then drove off while the officers checked his details. This lead to a police chase, resulting on the defendant being apprehended and spitting in an officer's face. The Judge, upon considering the tariff case R v Mako, fixed a starting point of four years two months' imprisonment. The Judge granted a two month reduction on for the early rehabilitative steps the defendant had taken and a 25 percent discount for his guilty plea. The end sentence was three years' imprisonment and all outstanding community work was cancelled. Judgment Date: 19 April 2018.
