The defendant appeared for sentence after pleading guilty to charges of importing methamphetamine, attempted possession of methamphetamine for supply and possession of methamphetamine for supply. The defendant was charged following an investigation into the importation of methamphetamine from Malaysia to various post office boxes in New Zealand. Methamphetamine had been taped into flat packages and placed into envelopes containing approximately 200 grams of methamphetamine at a time. The drugs were imported in a liquid form and required processing to be ready for sale. A starting point of 15 years’ imprisonment was given. A 15 per cent discount was given for remorse, willingness to take rehabilitative steps, personal issues and to recognise the hardship a foreign national would face in New Zealand prison. The reduced the sentence from 180 months to 153 months. From this figure, the defendant was entitled to a discount of 25 per cent for his early guilty pleas, for an end sentence of 114 months, that is, nine years and six months' imprisonment.
