Wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm — excessive self defence sentencing — R v Taueki [2005] 3 NZLR 372 (CA). The defendant was sentenced for assaulting the victim by putting him in a headlock and punching him multiple times to the head. The victim suffered serious cuts to his head from rings worn by the defendant,wounds which required staples to close. The court gave the defendant limited credit in recognition that there was an element of excessive self-defence. The defendant was sentenced to four years and three months' imprisonment and given a strike warning. Judgment Date: 10 January 2018.
