R v Messenger [2018] NZDC 540

Aggravated robbery — aggravated wounding — pervert the course of justice — sentencing. The defendant appeared for sentence on related charges of aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding and attempting to pervert the course of justice. The defendant and two others, armed with knives and partially disguised, entered a small shop where the two victims were working and demanded money. One of the victims attempted to wrestle with the defendant and was subsequently stabbed. Aggravating features included that the premises were targeted, there was planning and premeditation, the defendant was armed and partially disguised, the victims were outnumbered and unprovoked violence was used. The defendant was sentenced to a total of 6 years' imprisonment. Judgment Date: 16 January 2018
