Sentencing — burglary — meth — utensils — Arahanga v R [2012] NZCA 480. The defendant appeared for sentence having pleaded guilty to 10 charges of burglary and a charge of being in possession of utensils for the purposes of consuming methamphetamine. The defendant burgled several residential properties, some multiple times, and a golf club. He stole cash, jewelry and alcohol and, on occasions, staged the victim's home with violent and sexually provocative scenes. The Judge adopted a starting point of four and a half years' imprisonment but granted the defendant a reduction of six months for his personal mitigating factors, as well as a further 25 per cent for his guilty plea. The end sentence was three years' imprisonment and an order for destruction of the utensils. Judgment Date: 12 February 2019.
