Sentencing — importing a Class A controlled drug — LSD — poly drug addiction — substance use disorder — dependency — rehabilitation. The defendant appeared for sentence in relation to one charge of importing a Class A controlled drug, namely LSD. An alcohol and other drug assessment and report stated the defendant had a "poly drug addiction". This refers to a substance use disorder that amounts to an addiction. The starting point for the offending was five years' imprisonment. This was reduced by six months for the defendant's remorse, his recognition of his addiction, willingness to seek help and the fact he was turned away from Australia and lost his home and business. This was further reduced by 25 per cent to account for the defendant's early guilty plea, leaving an end sentence of three years and three months' imprisonment. Judgment Date: 15 February 2019.
