Sentencing — aggravated assault — breach of Covid-19 regulations — using a vehicle as a weapon — escape from COVID enforcement facility — Sentencing Act 2002, s 27. The defendant appeared for sentence on 17 charges. He had assaulted a police constable while escaping from a COVID-19 enforcement facility. The Court commented that at the time, the police constable had been protecting the public from exposure to the highly-contagious Delta variant. The defendant committed a series of other offences over the following months. A pre-sentence report detailed the defendant's upbringing that had featured sexual and physical abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, and time spent in state care. From a start point of 45 months' imprisonment, the Court made reductions for guilty plea and the matters raised in the report. The final sentence was 24 and a half months' imprisonment.
