Bail application — youth court — care and protection proceedings. Bail was granted for a young person to reside with their great aunt and uncle, following a breach of bail conditions and additional offending. Police submissions questioned whether the family group conference plan should be accepted, considering the recommended residence was not available. Police were hesitant that the young person would be open to negative influences if allowed to return to their local community. The Judge determined that in light of support provided by whanau, and their role in guiding and best caring for their own, the risks of the young person’s community could be overcome by the strengths. Bail was granted with curfew conditions. **Note: names have been changed to comply with legal requirements.
